Florence, Siena and the Chianti
Tuscany is one of the best-known regions of Italy and famous for its culture. It was here that Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci made their most beautiful works of art. Now the countless palazzos, thermal baths, triumphal arches, statues and frescos serve as indicators for the route. You traverse the splendid Chianti, known for its wines of the same name, and you visit cities like Florence, Siena and San Gimignano. The mild Tuscan climate is particularly suited to cycling holidays in the spring and autumn.

Although the daily distances are not long, the hilly terrain means you will need to be in good condition. You sleep in comfortable two or three star hotels or agriturismos, usually in the town center, but sometimes at secluded locations.
You start and finish in the extraordinarily beautiful city of Siena. Of course you will visit the wonderful marbled Dom and the world-famous square of Il Campo, known for its annual Palio, the fierce horse race where riders compete for the honor of their town district. Ice-cream lovers will no doubt roam the side streets looking for Nanini who has the name of being the best ice-cream maker in the world. After Siena you zigzag on many winding roads northwards to your accommodation in the picturesque village of Radda in Chianti. This town is situated on top of a forested hill and has a rich historical past. A short ride on a high road with beautiful views brings you to Greve in Chianti. Before you get there you will have to conquer a few short but steep climbs. One of the highlights is of course the ride to Florence, the capital city of Tuscany. You will have enough time to get to know this sumptuous city. From Florence you first travel through the valley of the Ena and the Greve and then climb to St. Andrea-in-Percussines where Machiavelli wrote his ‘Il Principe’ in exile. For a while the river Pesa will be your guide, until a hefty climb brings you to the ancient Roman town of Tavarnelle. The next day after breakfast you ride to the monumental high-lying town of Certaldo. You have a wonderful view of the medieval San Gimignano from here. Via this centuries-old town, famous for its residential towers, you descend to the crystal town of Colle di Val d’Elsa where you will spend the night. There is one more day trip through the Tuscan countryside, and it brings you back to Siena. You will have enough time to properly visit the beautiful buildings and squares that you didn’t get to see on your first day. One last night in Siena brings your cycling week through one of Italy’s most beautiful regions to an end.
