A dazzling display of highlights
An extremely varied bicycle trip through the Danube valley from Vienna via Bratislava to Budapest, in which the unspoiled scenery and not very well known art treasures form the theme of this Hungarian Rhapsody. The seemingly endless landscape is punctuated by small farming villages. You ride mainly flat and gently rolling country roads, guided by the impressive river that works its way through mighty hills and mountains.

The ride on the first day starts in an urban area, but later you ride through a vast nature reserve. On the way to Bad Deutsch Altenburg you go through Petronell-Carnuntum with many relics from the Roman era. After crossing the Danube you are in Slovakia. It is well worth your while to visit Bratislava; you can even book an extra night here. The trip continues on Hungarian territory where you will spend the night near Mosonmagyarovar. The next goal is Györ, the town of three rivers with a rich history, beautiful buildings and a car-free town center. When you are still quite a distance from Györ you already see the cathedral and the episcopal palace high on a hill. The route takes you further through a very rural region to Tata, a picturesque little town with ramparts and a citadel that have remained quite intact.
After Tata come the hills and the low-lying mountains. Every so often there will be some steep climbing to be done, although if you wish there is an easier route whereby you take a 20-km train trip and ride the last distance through farming villages to Esztergom. The enormous cathedral of this ‘Hungarian Rome’ can be seen from afar. A last ride along the river brings you to Szentendre; from there you can take the boat, train or bike to Budapest, the cultural center of Hungary. A visit to the Jugendstil baths of the Gellert Hotel is a ‘must’.
This cycle tour is actually a continuation of the Danube cycling path, the Donauradweg, but prosperous Austria and the still developing Hungary differ hugely. The condition of the roads and the accommodation simply cannot be compared. However, we have reserved accommodation for your stay in the Hungarian stopping places that will meet your and our requirements. You sleep in hotels of at least three star quality.
